Founded in 1950, Renmin Law School was the first law school established in the People¡¯ s Republic of China. Located in Beijing, Renmin Law School is considered one of the country's leading law schools and sits at the very heart of legal education and legal reform in China. Renmin Law School was ranked No. 1 three times in a row (2004, 2009, 2012) in the ministry of Education¡¯s assessment carried out every four years. Through bilateral agreements, annually about 70 exchange students from our partner universities study at Renmin Law School for a short period of time, a semester or full academic year and more than 70 students from Renmin Law School study abroad for a semester or full academic year. 

Academic Excellence

Renmin Law School has 12 academic departments: Jurisprudence; Chinese Legal History; Civil Law and Commercial Law; Criminal Law; Economic Law; Constitutional Law and Administrative Law; Environmental and Natural Resources Law; International Law; Procedural Law; the Law of Evidence; Comparative Law; and Intellectual Property Law. Along with these 12 departments, Renmin Law School¡¯s 30 research institutes carry out numerous projects of both national and international importance. Amongst many others, these centers include two national key research centers sponsored by the Ministry of Education¡ªThe Research Center for Criminal Jurisprudence and The Research Center for Civil & Commercial Jurisprudence. Renmin Law School is also home to the Research Center for the Socialist Legal System with Chinese Characteristics, the Experimental and Practical Teaching Center in Law, as well as the RUC Center for Disabled Person¡¯s Law & Legal Services. 

For students interested in understanding contemporary and historical issues in Chinese law and policy, there is no better place to study than Beijing. Students studying at Renmin Law School have access to China¡¯ s top legal scholars and the city of Beijing offers access to China¡¯ s leading lawyers, judges, business and political leaders. Remin Law School plays a strong advisory role on national legislation and judicial practice, with many faculty members participating in the drafting of and amendments to China¡¯ s Constitutional Law and other significant laws, and acting as advisors to the National People¡¯ s Congress Standing Committee and the Political Bureau of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China. Thus, students studying at Renmin Law School sit at the heart of China¡¯ s legislative research and practice.

Renmin Law School faculty members include not only influential senior jurists, but also a host of younger academics actively advancing the boundaries of legal research and pedagogy. Renmin Law School also offers a unique vantage point to explore comparative and international law: our faculty includes professors born overseas and trained at the world¡¯ s leading law schools. Approximately 25% of the faculty members can give lectures in English. Moreover, to offer students the opportunity to explore foreign legal systems and practical skills, Renmin Law School employs full-time and part-time instructors born overseas.

Over the past six decades, more than 20,000 students have graduated from Renmin Law School while more than 300,000 jurists have received training at Renmin Law School as continuing education students, judges, procurators, lawyers, university faculty members and civil servants. A significant number of Renmin Law School¡¯s alumni have become leaders in advancing the rule of law in China as government officials, judges, academics, pro bono lawyers, and corporate consultants. Favorable Location

Renmin Law School is located in the Chinese capital of Beijing, the political, economic, and social center of China. Considered the birthplace of Chinese law, Beijing is the seat of such central state organs as the National People's Congress, the Supreme People's Court, and the State Council, providing a unique opportunity for studying China's legislation, administrative rules, application of laws, and judicial proceedings. The Law School campus is in close proximity to other top schools, including Peking University, Tsinghua University, and Beijing Foreign Studies University, and is a short 10-minute drive to the former Imperial Gardens (Old Summer Palace) as well as the vast network of lakes, gardens, and palaces known as Summer Palace.
