Series Lectures of Comparative Law: ¡°Trump's Triumph: Democracy and Demagoguery¡±

On 21 November, 2016, Assistant Professor Guy R. Padula of Renmin Law School gave a lecture on ¡°Trump's Triumph: Democracy and Demagoguery¡±. Master Student Huang Zhuozhuo served as the host. Professor Ding Xiangshun was also present.



Donald Trump has just won the 2016 presidential election and became the President of the United States. Assistant Professor Guy R. Padula shared with the teachers and students some of his opinions on this election. To begin with, he gave an introduction of the economic and social background of the election and demonstrated with charts the distribution of the votes caught by President Trump. Then he pointed out that President Trump reached the head of the polls relying upon the power of demagoguery by initiating dissatisfaction among American society. He also made reflections on American Democracy combining with the history of American Constitution and its electoral system.



Later he discussed with Professor Ding on reasons why people chose President Trump and the effects of his triumph on the United States Supreme Court. Students were also involved in the lively discussion on several other relevant issues, which made the lecture a success.
