Student Forum: ¡°Legal Professional Qualification Examination, Professional Ethic and Legal Education reform¡± was jointly organized by the ¡°Asian Campus¡± students of the law school of Renmin University of China and the law school of Tianjin University

    On November 11, 2018, the student forum: "Legal Professional Qualification Examination, Professional Ethic and Legal Education reform" was successfully in the law school of Tianjin University (TJU). It was hosted by the Trilateral Cooperation Studies Center (law) of Renmin University of China (RUC) and the law school of TJU. Attendees included almost 50 students from RUC, TJU, Nagoya University of Japan, Sungkyunkwan University of Korea, University of Oslo of Norway, and Prof. Sun Youhai, the dean of the law school of TJU and executive director of Research Institute of China Green Development, Lan Lan, the associate dean of TJU and Prof. Ding Xiangshun, the director of the Trilateral Cooperation Studies Center (law) of RUC.
  The forum was presided over by Jiang Hanzhi, the graduate student of the law school of RUC and Li Jiaming, the undergraduate student of RUC. Prof. Sun and Prof. Ding gave the speech respectively.

       

       
  Having showed sincere gratitude to the TJU for jointly hosting such forum, Prof. Ding introduced the background of the activity: it was one part of the trilateral project "Asian Campus" organized by RUC and the extension of the expert forum with the same title held not long ago. Being student-centered, the forum motivated students to conduct comparative survey of various countries and gave the room for students majored in law from different countries to use English, the international language, to do their academic study, which could not only cultivate students' international communication ability and enhance their knowledge of relevant subjects, but enable the legal professionals in the future from all over the world to establish friendship through direct communication, which would help to develop legal professional cooperation relationship among countries. Prof. Ding also pointed out that since high-speed rail, the convenient and fast transportation, had reduced the distance between Beijing and Tianjin, we really hoped that students of TJU and RUC could have more usual communication.

  Prof. Ding asserted that the forum chose students as the center was an important way of realizing the student-centered teaching method and promoted the cooperation process of two universities. Besides, it could offer new perspectives to the teaching style reform of law school of TJU.
  During the academic discussion, aiming to know more about the common problems of legal profession admittance systems of various countries, professional ethic and legal education, the Chinese and foreign students of the law school of RUC gave the English academic reports based on the subjects of Japan, Korea, China, England, America and Norway respectively. Students of TJU joined the discussion and made comments.

       
  Students from Japan delivered the report with the title of "Legal Education in Japan" and introduced their legal education in different stages. The university legal education in Japan was co-organized by "law department", which was in the level of undergraduate and mainly gave liberal education, and ¡°School of law¡±, which was founded for graduate students and naturally developed legal professional education process together with Judicial Examination and Judicial Research Institute. Since the foundation of "School of law" in 2004, Japan had formed "School of law-Judicial Examination-Practical Research" such an organic talents training mode and gradually improved it in practice.
  Wang Jie, the student of TJU, spoke highly of Japan's achievements and investments of education. He maintained that Japan paid high attention to legal education and made it very sound and varied. From primary school to the colleges, Japan emphasized differently during the various stages, but the courses were arranged from easy to difficult in order to cultivate students' legal sense step by step, which was conducive to both personal development and social stability.

       

       
  Students from Korea gave a round introduction of legal profession education whose center was special law school founded in 2009. From the aspects of background knowledge, the system and content of legal education system, judicial examination and its present controversies, he allowed the attendees to know that the Korean law schools focused on the joint development in theory and practice and offered varieties of practical courses. However, he also pointed out the problems of Korean legal education including "the expensive fee", "the objectivity and transparency of admittance" and so on.
  Han Yiping, the student of TJU asserted that the courses and teaching method in Korean law schools helped students achieve balance between theoretic knowledge and working experience, which was totally different from the traditional spoon-feeding teaching style. The strict admittance system of law school and the relevant high professional requirements guaranteed the quality of Korean legal professionals. Meanwhile, having compared china's "practical courses" with Korea's, Han drew the conclusion that the extracurricular practical courses might not provide maximum benefit due to college students' lack of professional knowledge and social experience.

       

                  
  Looking back upon the history, standing on the point of the current situation and expecting the future, Wang Jinyuan, Sheng Yuchong, Hao Min and Li Jiaming, students from RUC, elaborated the process of Chinese legal education reform and development and gave their own thought-provoking comments on the first National Uniform Legal Profession Qualification Examination held after reform.
  Chen Yuzhuo, the student of TJU, considered that Chinese team's report was more sound and objective, but it still could have more opinions and views. For example: what's the relationship between legal education and legal profession qualification examination? What influence did the examination bring to the Chinese legal education?

       

       
  Jiang Hanzhi, the student of RUC, gave the keynote speech with the title of "English Legal Education". From England and Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland these three aspects, he systematically analyzed the legal profession qualification, profession ethic and education reform of these three areas. Having mainly introduced the legal professionalism training system in England, which was most representative, he talked about the distinction of solicitor and barrister in light of such a dualistic training method, based on which, he also gave detailed opinion concerning the LLM and JD training system in England. He asserted that the academic training style also had substantial effect on professional one.
  "The reporter had clearly and comprehensively demonstrated English latest legal education system, which was very logic and rich in content." Dai Ru, the reviewer, said, "English legal education was closely related to legal practice, while the former one was profession-oriented." She thought that legal education was a typical and representative part of nation law, so it was absolutely crucial in the national legal system. She emphasized that it was extremely essential for countries to refer to others' legal education style. Since English legal education had a very long history, it was wise to absorb from them and even if China hadn¡¯t taken action now, it could also offer some inspiration to Chinese legal education's developing direction and ultimate reform goal.

       

       
  Jiang Yuan, the student of RUC, gave a speech under the topic of "Legal Education and Legal Profession of United States". From the attestation of law school and law degree, to teaching methods and background of legal profession, she chose the lawyer's training road as the main line and introduced the whole procedure of being a lawyer in the United States comprehensively. Besides, based on her observation about the similarities and differences of the training modes of LLM, JD and SJD in the United States, she elaborated such modes' impact on the development of legal profession in US.
  Zhang Yunrui, the student of TJU, spoke highly of the keynote speech and considered the speaker sensitively captured the contradictions and conflicts hidden in current legal education reform as well as recognized the solution proposed in the speech. Moreover, he also shared his own perspective about the legal education comparison between China and US.

       
  Kelly, Kais, Katharina and Marie, students from Norway, delivered speeches entitled "Legal Education in Norway". Combining the historic relationship between Norway and Denmark, she wholly combed the legal education history of Norway and introduced the legal education structure and mode of Norway, centering on the setting of law school, the foundation of law degree and relevant admittance condition. Besides, Kelly shared a legal student's life in Norway, including various student groups, internship experience in law firm and so on.
  Shen Qian, the student from TJU, maintained that the speech uncovered the mystery of Norwegian legal education and demonstrated its whole structure clearly. She was also impressed by the harmonious and friendly learning atmosphere in the Norwegian law schools, which was worth referring to by China.

       

       
  The attendees positively discussed the keynote speech and remarks and raised several questions including "The advantages and disadvantages if letting veteran be the judge", "Whether the common law and comparative law education organized by Peking University international law school would be recognized by ABA", "If the content of Japanese Judicial Examination was advisable", which were answered by the reporters respectively.
  Thanks to the support of RUC and TJU, the seminar was organized, reported and commented all by students. It not only enhanced different countries' understanding of legal education, legal professional ethic and legal profession qualification examination, but improved and exercised our ability to deliver academic speech in English, broadened our horizon and brought precious friendship.
