1.Tort Law and the Environment
Abstract: Dean Klein will discuss how the U.S. legal system addresses situations where an individual is harmed by the release of a toxic substance into the environment. He will focus on private actions based on tort law.
Dean Klein will introduce several common law theories that form the basis for individual claims related to environmental harm. These include trespass to land, private and public nuisance, and strict liability for the conduct of abnormally dangerous activity. Dean Klein also will discuss the importance that the U.S. legal system places on establishing a causal connection between a toxic exposure and personal injury.

2. From the Law of the Seas to Ocean Law: building up a new understanding on the conservation of the High-seas
Abstract: Professor Santana will speak about environmental protection of the world's oceans, from the United Nations Convention of the Law of the Sea to current discussions about an international agreement on the conservation of the high seas.
