On the evening of December 26th, 2018, RUC Law School Undergraduate Academic Innovation Talent Completion Report and ¡°How do Undergraduates Enter the Academic World¡± Lecture was held in room 601 of Mingde Building in Renmin University of China (RUC).
Professor Long Weiqiu, the dean of Beihang University Law School, two vice deans of RUC Law School Prof. Yang Dong and Prof. Gao Shengping, the researcher Li Honglei of Institute of Law, Chinese Academy of Social Sciences, Prof. Wang Xu of RUC Law School, associate professor Wang Yang of Tsinghua University, two associate professors of RUC Law School, Yao Huanqing and Wang Ying and the associate professor Zhang Li of China University of Political Science and Law attended and participated in discussions. The lecture was preided over by Prof. Wang Xu.

First, Prof. Yang Dong showed gratitude to all attendees, especially Prof. Long Weiqiu, researcher Li Honglei, associate professors Wang Yang and Zhang Li who came from afar. After looking back to the history of establishing the undergraduates academic training mode, he expressed the expectation to have further cooperation with other colleges and introduce such mode to the whole country. Finally, he thanked the secretary Lin Jia and dean Wang Yi for paying close attention to the training plan and this activity.
Then, students chosen in the 2017 Undergraduate Academic Innovation Talent Training Plan started to give their completion report and teachers made comments respectively.
According to associate professor Zhang Li, Liu Yuhe, one of the selected students, showed her deep thoughts in her essay, to some degree, but still lacked preciseness in the aspect of academic standard. For example, she still have room to make progress in terms of quotation, citation and literature review. As for Sa Rina¡¯s report, he pointed out that categorization and summary of the analysis and the collection of cases could be better.

Associate professor Wang Ying said all students¡¯ essays were ¡±commendable¡±. However, there were also some questions including the improper structure, the lack of the analysis of legal effects and the combination of theories and cases, the slight inappropriateness in topic selection and so on.

When it came to Zou Demin¡¯s essay, researcher Li Honglei emphasized that Zou¡¯s literal expression had room to improve and his analysis was not sufficient. The researcher suggested that students could think about questions from three levels: whether certain legal means was rational, whether the means matched the purposes, if there was better method to choose. Besides, he pointed out that the connection of each part of the essay of Wang Junmin was too weak and the logic relation should be reinforced. He suggested that students should learn to choose and further grasp the core concepts.

According to associate professor Wang Yang, the four essays about civil and commercial law, more or less, had some disadvantages as follows: the absence of conclusion, the obscure concepts, the problems proposed was not given further elaboration, failing to clearly master the legal provisions and think about the relationship with social practice when using provisions to support their views, the topic was too grand or improper, the academic norms were incomplete and so on. He emphasized it should be cautious and careful when proposing legislative advice in undergraduates¡¯ essays because the requirement for such advice was very high.

Associate professor Yao Huanqing said we should suppose scholars were confident of their research results and would not find any contradiction when analyzing logically. Therefore, students had better read more literature of others when criticizing them and gain some background knowledge about the legitimacy of intellectual property protection and nonadversarial confrontation of consumption. Also, behaviors like writing essays too board should be avoided as undergraduates writing needed deep discussion by focusing on one certain micro problems.

Prof. Yang Dong praised Zhang Jiaxuan¡¯s report and reemphasized the importance of training academic interest of undergraduates. Undergraduates should act precede awareness and form good reading and writing habits.

Finally, Prof. Long Weiqiu gave the summary. He pointed out that it was a very precious chance to develop one-on-one coaching on such a high level basis. First, we should put undergraduates first and focus on not only knowledge-based teaching but research-based teaching during the education reform. The research of law should consider three levels: the first was the consideration of judges and lawyers and standard solution to typical cases; the second was the ability of overcoming challenges and solving atypical cases; the third was the innovation and participation in legislation. The teaching of undergraduates should make efforts to realize the purposes in the first stage and ensure them can learn by themselves. The professor asserted that autonomous reading could be divided into interest reading and research reading, the latter one was of great significance. However, the final requirement of reading was to encourage students to write more. Finally, the professor appealed to all attendees to go into the academic area and develop independent awareness together.

The lecture ended in warm applause. The teachers who made comments guided students by referring to their deep feelings and rich experience in reading and teaching and issued certificates to students gave reports. After the lecture, teachers and students have a further communication, sharing their academic feelings and gained some experience from each other.
