Professor Wang Yi, Dean of Renmin Law School, led a delegation to Tokyo

Professor Wang Yi, Dean of Renmin Law School, led a delegation to Tokyo to attend the exchange activity held by Hitotsubashi University and to visit the University of Tokyo’s Faculty of Law, from June 30th to July 2nd. During the three-day visit, the delegation, which also included Professor Yang Dong and Professor Cheng Lei, both vice-deans of Renmin Law School, as well as Associate Professor Zhang Jiyu, acting president of Renmin Law and Technology Institute, carried out academic discussions with Japanese legal scholars.



On July 1st, Hitotsubashi University held the Day of Renmin University, which featured many activities centering on the academic cooperation between the two universities. The visiting team from Renmin University led by Vice Chancellor Wang Liming, including the one representing Renmin Law School, attended the aforementioned activities.



On the morning of July 1st, Vice Chancellor Wang Liming led the visiting team from Renmin Law School to attend a conference with Hitotsubashi University’s Faculty of Law. Vice President Yamada Atsushi and Professor Tadano Masahito, Dean of the Faculty of Law, attended the conference with other faculty members. The parties to the conference made a general review of their previous cooperation, including the joint degree program, and devised solutions to the problems that had surfaced, as well as exchanging ideas on the legal areas available for future cooperation. It was then that the opening ceremony of the Day of Renmin University took place. Vice President Yamada Atsushi and representatives from various faculties attended the ceremony. Dean Wang Yi made a brief introduction to Renmin Law School and the current cooperation programs with Hitotsubashi University’s Faculty of Law.



After the opening ceremony, Professor Wang Liming delivered an academic speech entitled ‘Highlights in the section of personal rights in the civil code’. Professor Tadano Masahito hosted the speech while Professor Yang Dong interpreted the whole speech. During the speech, Professor Wang Liming briefly introduced the background behind setting up an independent section of personal rights in the civil code and the ten highlights in its draft. He commented on the generalization of the problems in civil law after the speech. Professors Sakai Taro, Tajimi Makoto and Chihiro Nunoi raised their questions regarding the speech and discussed them with Professor Wang.



The delegation visited the University of Tokyo’s Faculty of Law the next day, and met Professor Osawa Yutaka, Dean of the Faculty of Law. Professor Dogauchi Hiroto also attended the conference. Professor Wang Yi introduced the basic situation of Renmin Law School and revisited the history between Chinese and Japanese legal scholars as well as the establishment of Renmin Law and Technology Institute. He expressed his wishes for the two universities to improve their cooperation in the field of legal study and for their student exchange programs to continue in the future.



In the afternoon, Dean Wang was invited to deliver a speech on the norms of civil law. The speech was hosted by Mr. Yoshio Iteya, a partner from Mori Hamada & Matsumoto Law Firm and was interpreted by Dr. Chen Zheli, who graduated from Renmin Law School. Professors Chihiro Nunoi, Tajimi Makoto, Zhou Jianlong, and Mr. Masashi Kurose, Counsel of Nishimura & Asahi Law Firm, also attended the speech.
