SINO-EURO COORPORATION

 

In 1993 the Law School of Renmin University of China began to formally exchange and cooperate with the European countries in the field of legal education. Prof. Christian Louit, President of Aix-Marseille University of Law, Economics and Science, came to visit the Law School and talked with Dean Zeng Xianyi. Dean Zeng Xianyi was invited to visit France, and signed an agreement of exchange and cooperation with Aix-Marseille University of Law, Economics and Science in Dec.1994. At the same time, Dean Zeng talked with the University of Paris and European Union, and set up "European Legal Training Programs. "Since 1996, through an English examination of the Law School has been sent to Europe every the other year to practice and make an on-the-spot study after a year of intensive French training domestically. In 2000, the program has been extended to Peking University, Nankai University and China University of Political Science and Law. Its success has set up a good example.

At present, the Law School of RUC has established stable academic exchange and cooperation relationship with universities and research institutes in France, Germany, England, Switzerland, Russia, Austria, and nearly twenty northern and eastern European countries. The Law School has jointly held international or bilateral seminars relating to many legal subjects, and has exchanged legal materials and scholars. Every year, tens of jurists come to the Law School to hold all kinds of academic activities. In July 2000, cooperating with the EU-China Higher Educational Program, the Law School successfully held the "joint conference of EU-China Educational Cooperation" in RUC, which composed a new passage for the exchange and cooperation of the Law School with European countries in the field of legal education. Besides, the Law School has also given more attention to cooperation with European countries in legal personnel training through many channels and has held various training programs and courses.

Xiao Yang, President and Chief Justice of the Supreme People's Court and Guest Professor of the Law School; Liang Guoqing, Vice Procurator General of the Supreme People's Procurator and Guest Professor of the Law School; Wei Yu, Vice Minister of Education; Hu Cangsheng, Vice Chairman of the Legislative affairs Committee of the NPC Standing Committee, participate in the Joint Conference of EU-China Law School Deans held at the Law School Building.

Pierre Truche, President of the Supreme Court of France meets with the 2nd group of the graduate students sent to France by the Law School to attend the European Law Training Programme at the Supreme Court of France.

On April 4th, 1999, the first Sino-French Judicial Procedure Mechanism International Symposium, jointly held by Law School of RUC and Aix-Marseille University of Law, Economics and Science, was held at RUC. It was attended by university presidents, law school deans, famous law professors, Members of Parliament, judges and lawyers from France and Italy, and the famous scholars from RUC Law School and Law School of Beijing University, as well as many other universities. It was also attended by judges of the Supreme People's Court, public prosecutors of the Supreme People's Procuratorate and lawyers from China.

From September 28th to 30th, the Sino-German Civil and Economic Law International Symposium was held at the Academic Conference Hall of Law School of RUC. It was jointly sponsored by Law School of RUC and Faculty of Law of Humboldt University of Germany, chaired by Prof. Zhao Zhongfu, a well-known scholar of civil law and the Academic Supervisor for LL.D. candidates of civil law, and Prof. Thomas Raiser, Vice Dean of Faculty of Law, Humboldt University, Germany.

From October 16 to 29, 2004 China Legal Education delegation paid a visit to European Counties for about two weeks. The delegation was headed by Professor Zeng Xianyi, Chairman of the Guidance Commission on Higher Education under the Ministry of Education and President of the Research Association for Legal Education of China Law Society. This is the second delegation of this kind organized by the Ministry of Education. The first one was the China Legal Education Delegation to U.S. in 1998. This time the delegation visited the eight most famous universities of Germany and U.K., including Heidelberg University, the University of Bonn, Homburg University, Cambridge University, Oxford University, the London School of Economics and Political Science, the London School of Oriental and African Studies as well as the University of Manchester. In addition, the delegation also visited the world biggest law firm, Clifford Chance, headquartered in London. The members of the delegation exchanged the views and discussed in-depth with the presidents, deans and experts from those universities on the following subjects, including the curriculum of legal science course, the integration between bar exam and legal education, the administrative works within law school in terms of academic research, teaching and the proportion of faculty and student. All those inspiring view exchanges have not only deepened the knowledge of the different models of legal education of two law families and added the experiences of legal education in China, but also contributed a lot to the cause of Chinese legal education stepping into the world and expanded more room on international exchanges.

A company of seven scholars famous in the realm of company law in China, under the leadership of Deputy Dean Long Yifei, invited by Law School of University of Tuebingen and supported by Law School of Renmin University of China and German Tyssen Foundation, arrives in the beautiful University of Teubingen to attend the international seminar on Internationalization and Convergence of National Company Laws in a Globalized Economy, co-organized by Law School of Renmin University of China and Law School of University of Teubingen. Three days last for the heated and effective discussions on the latest development on Chinese company law and German company law, and some other countries¡¯.

On March 28, Mr. Serge ABOU, EU¡¯s ambassador to China, visited Renmin University of China at the invitation of Dean WANG Liming, and delivered an academic speech on the topic of Sino-European Relations in English.
