For more than fifty years, in the light of prospering national legal research and a striving for the national legal system construction, the faculty of the Law School of Renmin University of China (RUC) has developed a scientific attitude of combining theories with practice and of striving for higher goals. It has made thorough and advanced researches concerning important theories and practical problems in the development of the nation and society. Having participated in the draft of the Constitution, and of basic law, and other important regulations, and of consultations concerning judicial affairs, and having accomplished and published a large quantity of valuable scientific researches, they have contributed a lot in pushing forward the construction of a national legal system in every field and have earned a top flight academic reputation for the Law School.
According to rough statistics, during the Eleventh Five-year period, the teachers of the Law School have published over five hundred legal works and over three thousand academic papers both at home and abroad. For many years, because of the tasks that our school has undertaken in research projects at the state level and because of our published academic works, we have been awarded by the state and the province as being a top law school in the country. Professors in our school have attained the greatest achievements according to the result of selection in the state philosophical and social scientific fund project and by the key literary base research project of the Ministry of Education has been carried on in the past two years. The China Law Reports has been jointly edited each year by the Law School of RUC and the Supreme People's Court, and has been published in Mainland China , Hong Kong and Taiwan . Its English version has been published by Butterworth¡¯s Press and has exerted extensive influence home and abroad. It won first place and received the Prize of Outstanding Works of Law Science from 1983-1993 awarded by State Administration of Press and Publication. It also received the Special Class Prize of 3rd Session of Outstanding Achievements in Philosophy and Sociology of Beijing. The third volume of the Theories of Criminal Law with Prof. Gao Mingxun as chief editor and China Legal History of Revolutionary Basis with Prof. Zhang Xipo as chief editor were awarded the highest awards given to law schools by the sixth, seventh and eighth Five-year nation philosophical and social scientific fund project. In the statistics given by Law School of Peking University, the quotation rate of those essays written by several professors in our department ranked in the top ten. The quotation rate of Prof. Wang Liming's essays ranks first.
Consisting of 11 teaching and research centers and 15 research centers, the capability of the legal research institution of the Law School is second to none in China . Two research centers--- The Research Center of Criminal Jurisprudence and Research Center of Civil and Commercial Jurisprudence were nominated as top culture and social science research centers by the Ministry of Education. In 2003, the civil and commercial jurisprudence research center passed the key discipline evaluation by the Ministry of Education with full marks, ranking No.1 among over 100 nationwide key research bases. It achieved the same success in the evaluation of 2004. In addition, the research center of criminal jurisprudence ranked the first among the first batch of 15 national culture and social science key research centers in the September 2003 evaluation by the Ministry of Education.
The "985 Project" that is a research base for socialistic legal system with China characteristics has also passed the assessment of the Evaluation Committee of Ministry of Education. According to the requirement of the "211 projects", the Law School has built China law information holdings as well. In addition, the civil and commercial law forum, the lectures of criminal law experts, the forum of criminal law dissertation, the forum of constitution, the legal culture salon, and the forum of jurisprudence organized by law school have invited many great experts of law and politics. They enjoy world-wide fame to and deliver speeches and make great academic and social influence all over the world.
Three generations of old, middle-aged, and young scholars of the Law School participated in the draft of the Chinese constitution, and have made important laws. They have made prominent contributions to the building and completion of the legal system of the People¡¯s Republic of China. Four constitutions of China, the General Rules for Civil Law, the Marriage Law, the major Procedure Laws, Contract Law, Corporation Law, Intellectual Property Law, Trademark Law, Negotiable Securities Law, and other important laws are all shining with the light from the wisdom of the scholars in the Law School of RUC. Prof. Xu Chongde, a pre-eminent scholar on constitutional law, has successively received nomination letters from four commissioners of the Standing Committee of the National People's Congress. They are Mr. Peng Zhen, Mr. Wan Li, Mr. Qiao Shi, and Mr. Li Peng. Professor Xu Chongde is also a commissioner of the Draft Committee of Basic Law for Hong Kong and Macao Special Administration as well as the Preparation Committee of Hong Kong and Macao Special Administration Zone. As the draft of the Civil Law of China has been fully undertaken, Professor Wang Liming has been appointed to make the experts¡¯ proposition for the draft of the Tort Law and the Personality Law. At the same time, the Law School has specially organized scholars from the whole country to make an expert's proposition and legislation reasons to a draft of the Civil Law of China. In September of 2002, the experts' proposal was submitted to the standing committee of the National People's Congress, and it received unanimous appraise from scholars and experts. Some contents have been absorbed by The Property Law which is under draft now. Moreover, the scholars of the Law School are invited to provide many consultative reports for the NPC, the State Department and its ministries and commissions, and to, practice and pursue the great principles of the rule of law.
