The Intellectral Property Teaching and Research Center

The Intellectual Property Teaching and Researching Center of Renmin University established in 1986 is the earliest specialized organization exclusively engaged in intellectual property teaching and research Since 1981 Renmin University has recruited graduate students majoring in Civil Law who change to Intellectual Property Law. In 1986 the initial postgraduate program of Intellectual Property Law course was established by the original National Education Commission with the encouragement of Director General of WIPO. The Center has now become the most complete higher education and research base It has to cultivate legal professionals of different levels, and has conferred law degrees in all bachelor's, master's and doctoral levels. By 2005, more than 300 students have respectively received their master's or doctoral or post-doctoral degrees and nearly 600 have acquired their second B. A. degree. These talented professionals are now involved in legislation, judicatory, administrative management and science research, some of whom have even become elites in the realm of intellectual property.

Currently, the Center has 16 full-time and part-time researchers among which 8 are professors (6 are doctoral advisers), 6 are associate professors and 2 are lecturers publishing more than 20 monographs and teaching material and over 200 articles. The center staffs participate in intellectual property legislation and their research achievements are adopted by the legislature as reflected in the legal document and other norm documents. They also provide experts¡¯ advice for both the court and the administration department. The center has made major contributions to the legal system construction since its establishment. Its teaching materials are widely acknowledged and maintain recognized status. Prof. Liu Chuntian, dean of the center has been invited as a member of National Higher Education Law Instruction Committee by the Ministry of Education, and has been acting as chief editor of Intellectual Property Law. This has been one of the ¡°Facing 21st century higher education core teaching material for a law course¡±. The center provides for many domestic and international academic exchange activities. Prof. Guo Shoukang, keeps in close touch with UNESCO and many other famous research organizations in Europe, America and Japan, as UNESCO CHAIRHOLDER of the Property Right and Neighboring Right Teaching Center as sponsored by UNESCO. He is the only scholar gaining the unusual honor in Asia.
